General Information |
"Jane Eyre", with lyrics by John Caird and music by Paul Gordon (better known for 'Les Miserables'),was a new show which opened in New York in 2000 and looked set to deliver the biggest thrill of any Broadway musical that season where it ran for 209 performances.
Standing out from a crowd of arch, overblown shows that catered to the lowest common denominator, "Jane Eyre", like its heroine, shines with rare sensibility. A musical for grownups: spare, somber and rich, with an absorbing story and a lyrical score through which the show's creators come closer than anyone could have imagined to capturing the spirit -- and the spirituality -- of this dark Cinderella story.
The writers managed to distill a bulky Victorian novel of some 500 pages into a show that is intimate, agile and fast-moving. What's more, they find within it a story that lends itself surprisingly well to music.
Charlotte Bronte's novel, well known to any one of a 'certain age' takes us straight to the Yorkshire moors as the austere Jane charts her life, ponders her relationship with the brooding yet buff Mr. Rochester and faces the demons of there past lives.
"Jane Eyre" may have sunk into obscurity across the pond but has seen a recent revival here in the UK with performances at the Grand in Blackpool (2006) and also in Brighton (2007). |
